Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Fri, January 19, 2007 - 12:22 AMOK well, first off you made it easier by leaving out PROMETHEA since it
blows away the printing press, computers and movies, let alone any one other
work...
so with the remaining choices I have to bow out on League as I haven't read that one yet...
but of the remaing three.... hmmm.
I would have to say FROM HELL is the most substantial of the three.
It has a deep seriousness. It has philosophical nature that is not
predictable or simple. It is grand and epic while small and human.
Well I could go on. It is really very good and better than the others.
Cheers,
RevRob

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Sun, January 21, 2007 - 3:15 PMWhat a tough question! "Watchmen" was the definitely most groundbreaking (and the one that I've read the most) with "V for Vendetta" a close second, but for pure enjoyment value I'll take "League" any day! ;-)

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Tue, January 23, 2007 - 11:24 AMTop 10? -

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Sat, January 27, 2007 - 4:57 PMI might second the vote for Top Ten; I recognize the others as "serious" works of artistic achievement, choosing Promethea as my favorite, but for sheer sprawling humanity (admittedly in archetypal, super-powered form) Top 10 is awfully damned good. -

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Sat, January 27, 2007 - 8:49 PMout of the choices: V
out of his works? Promethea, hands down.
The Invisibles turned my girlfriend on to comics, and that they could be badass.
Promethea got her HOOKED like a basehead. -

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Mon, January 29, 2007 - 3:28 AMGrant Morrison's _Filth_ did that to me -- turned me WAY on.
But Seven Soldiers of Victory made me a basehead.
I come to comics as... well... a lit. crit. geek.
I will have to find this Promethea, Beautiful Saul.

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Sun, February 4, 2007 - 4:53 PMWow. I'm going to have to check out TOP 10.
I'm pretty much interested in the philosophical stuff...
and not so much the super hero stuff unless really suffused in metaphore...
but ... "sprawling humanity"
that sounds pretty good.
Can you all tell me any more about the "meaningfulness" of TOP 10,
without giving anything away.
The Tom Strong stuff in Promethea was OK - I liked him well enough but
it seemed almost like it was a necessary part of the formula.
All best,

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Wed, February 7, 2007 - 9:21 PMYou know... Top 10 starts with the premise of "everyone being a superhero" or at least having super-powers.
It shows... well, us. The world... or a dominant part of it. It's like... a cop show. A good one. Think... "The Closer"... but comicified. -
-
Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Thu, February 8, 2007 - 2:04 PMI have to say I pretty much have nothing to do with cop or mob entertainment.
I find it annoying usually even if done well.
Everyone has only one of three roles to play COP, CRIMINAL or VICTIM...
but what intriques me about this approach (further as thought up and executed by
Alan Moore) is that if everyone is a superhero / cop then in at least one sense NO ONE IS...
well weather this has anything to do with Alan's approach, I love and trust his work
enough to know that there will be something there that goes beyond the usual...
for example having read The Watchmen only recenlty... I don't find it to be as great
as a lot of people do ... it think because of the whole super hero thing ... what is
interesting about it is that he is breaking the super hero mold and stereotypes...
and I can see how it was very revolutionary for its time... but that novelty is
no longer at hand and the story line I found entertaining but not really uplifting,
expanding, and challanging the way I have found much of his other work.
Looking forward to it in any event.
All best,

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Fri, February 9, 2007 - 1:23 AMOne of the pleasures of "Top Ten" is how it avoids those three cliches. It's also very funny-- a blind Zen cabbie who trusts the universe to point his cab in the "right" direction-- and sad at the same time. Best of all-- the reason I put it on this list-- is where it goes with the character of Smax, who first (ya gotta trust Moore on this) looks like another big surly cop/Superman clone with a white palm print on his chest... and then completely astonished me when it turned into an epic fantasy quest with a mock-up Lord of the Rings cover, a fairy tale world with a bureaucratic Death figure (turns out you don't have to be afraid of Death-- there's a lot of them, just watch out for your own, and say hello to dennis for me) and one of Moore's most frightening villains and emotionallly moving climaxes. I understand completely what you're saying about "cops and mafia" entertainment, but hope you'll give this series a chance. -

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Fri, February 9, 2007 - 2:07 AMOh FOR SURE....I need no other sales pitch than the guys name but I will surely get to this one
now sooner than I will to the Future Shocks which I've read but not finished.
:)
Cheers and thanks for th futher encouragement - I'll just get to it that much sooner.

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 2:16 AM"breaking the super hero mold and stereotypes... " Ya, that horse is long dead and they're still flogging it, but only in the comic book world. the rest of the world has never heard of Top Ten or The Boys or Watchmen. I see this movie as a big step for comics towards becoming a respected art form. It's sad but the vast majority of people have no idea that there is more to comics then Superman, to them this will be much more revolutionary then it ever was for us.

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Wed, June 13, 2007 - 1:41 PMI HATED Tom Strong in Promethea. HATED IT HATED IT.
I couldn't comment before because I hadn't read it. Now that I have... yuck with Tom Strong. I considered reading it, but... I'll just wait.

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Mon, February 5, 2007 - 10:20 PMI agree with others here, Promethea was the the best. Of your choices, I would have to go with V for Vendetta.
-
Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Wed, February 14, 2007 - 8:15 AMMy fave was actually YUGGOTH CULTURES (but I'm a mythos-freak), but of those listed FROM HELL or V IS FOR VENDETTA. PROMETHEA was great!

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Sat, February 24, 2007 - 10:41 PMI would have to say Watchmen, because it holds up better to repeated readings, and like all good books, it can be interpreted in many different ways. It is also far more positive than V for Vendetta, which suffered from an overdose of pathos and left me with bad taste in my mouth.
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a close second, because it has a much more literary background, and has far more diverse characters.
I'm still not sure about From Hell. -
-
Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Fri, April 6, 2007 - 11:59 AMThe breadth and scope of Watchmen is really just mindblowing, but I haven't read From Hell. And as much as I liked League, I'd have to say my favorite was V for Vendetta. It's just pitch perfect.
I'd also like to put word in for Promethea, which is probably my favorite of all Alan's work. That and "Mojo Doesn't Socialize".

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Wed, April 25, 2007 - 8:19 AMI'd have to go with Watchmen simply because of the scope of it, and what it did for the perception of comics as a whole. From Hell is a close second though, for sheer density and craftsmenship.

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Wed, June 13, 2007 - 1:38 PMJust finished Watchmen.
... I will probably never read it again because it read SO GODAWFUL SLOW and because I figured it out... liked the indeterminate ending, understand why it is the one that changed graphic novels -- it introduced postmodern concepts to the genre and beforehand, they hadn't been used very much (from what I have read of the pre-85 set), but... it was such a torturous read. I could have skipped the prose parts at the end, but I knew I couldn't... what if I decide *shudder* to teach this one day??
Next up is From Hell and then V for Vendetta. Lemme tell you, I found the movie pretty unwatchable and did not finish with it and did not mind since I knew Moore didn't back it anyway...
But I am loving the necessity of having to deepen my read of him and then reporting it. -

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Wed, June 13, 2007 - 9:04 PMthey totally butchered V. you'll be very pleased with the real deal, I'd wager.

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Wed, June 13, 2007 - 9:14 PMThe variations between the movie and the book are so
minimal its rediculous on V.
Very few movies have ever been closer to the source.
IF Alan and others are outraged about the few changes made fine,
but they are minimal none the less. Much of that movie,
over 50% is verbatim.
Really good movie.
cheers

Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Wed, June 13, 2007 - 9:27 PMif we hadn't been with friends, my GF and I would have left the theater.
if you wanna see something in the spirit of V for Vendetta on the screen, rent Children Of Men. -
-
Re: Which is better in your opinion?
Sat, June 16, 2007 - 11:11 AMSo... total opposites on V.
and total sync of Children of Men...
that movie is really amazing.
Of course I tend to like stuff with flying pigs.
cheers
